We’re grinding the rust off of the doors and front fenders. As you can see, some holes are appearing where the metal was rusted all the way through, so we’ll need to do some repairs there, though we think that, on the whole, the body parts are usable. We’ve also welded the right rear quarter panel on, so now there just needs to be some smoothing out done there.

We’re continuing to clean up the front fenders, and Tim has etch primed and started welding the repair panel on. When he is finished we will smooth everything out and gray prime everything over.

We’ve begun the metalwork on Laurens’s front fenders before we re-install them. So far, they appear to be in very good condition–a bit of old junk and stuff stuck on them, but we’re getting it all off and will do any filling that needs to be done and then will prime them in gray.

We started pulling out all of Laurens’s parts and will be sorting them for those that need cleaning and those that are ready to be re-installed as we prep to re-assemble Laurens’s Mustang. Tim also did some grinding on the trunk lid and hood to get out the little bits of rust, then he etch primed it to keep it protected.

We’ve begun the restoration of Laurens’ headlights and headlight buckets, while Tim continues to grind away at the metal that needs work, mostly in the trunk compartment and the rear quarter panels.

We’re painting on a special metal etching primer over all our lead work, which is what Big Chief is doing, going behind Tim as he melts and molds the lead fillings. We’ve also cut out the passenger rear quarter panel to replace it and have primed over the exposed metal.

The whole family was out working on this baby in the days following Thanksgiving to get as much done as possible in order to wrap her on up for Laurens, who we know is eager to get his Mustang. Jared was back from college for the break and even chipped in on Friday and Saturday! We’ll be updating the blog ASAP with pictures of our work.

Lead filling is slow, precise work, but we’re making headway.

Timbo and Big Chief have started the lead filling metalwork on Laurens’s Mustang! It’s a big project which will take a couple of days, but as you can see, they’re making quick progress.

Here’s Tim prepping Laurens’s Mustang for the metalwork we’ll be doing over the next couple of days, replacing all the bondo with lead filler! Pat’s also doing some work, but this time around he’s running a water test to see if we need to do anymore fiberglassing on Laurens’s cowl. As you can see, there is some leaking on the passenger’s side, so Pat and the crew have a little more work to do in that area.
