Here’s Big Chief sorting through Laurens’ removed parts to determine which ones need cleaning/restoring before they are installed back onto the Mustang. Timbo is also repairing some of the damaged and missing studs that the windshield clips clip onto before we put the glass back in, and we are cleaning up a lot of interior parts in preparation for the re-assembly.

A couple of things are going on here. One, you can see that the floorpans are very solid, rust-free, they’ll be great and won’t need metalwork. Two, the previous owners installed some kind of insulation with an adhesive spray, so now strings of the old insulation are all over the floorpans (that’s the white-yellow stuff). So what we’re going to do is sand away what’s left of the adhesive and insulation, because this kind of insulation is like a sponge, it just soaks up water and holds it to the metal so it starts to rust often, and eventually replace it with an asphalt-based water-resistant insulation pads, which will stay dry and work a lot better to avoid rust. Under these pads, we’ll convert any surface rust we find and hit all the floorpans with undercoat spray, which is a really thick and hard black paint-like spray that will further help to prevent rust.

There’s a lot going on here! We’ve removed the front valance and both fenders on Cathy’s Mustang, and are showing the condition of the metal as much as we can. We also drained and removed the radiator and have just pulled the engine.

We’ve cleaned up Biff’s front and rear windshields (The Dude did it but forgot to take pictures!) as well as the rubber seals around them, then put the seals back on and wrapped up the glass for storage until we get to Phase III, the re-assembly phase–which we admit, is a ways away. Check out the original factory Carlite stamps–this glass is perfect, we’re really excited about all the great stuff we’ve found.

Tim installed the rear trim as we begin the re-assembly process bit-by-bit. We also did a little bit of grinding on the passenger’s kick panel where we found a little rust, and we also primed the dash panel over in gray prime, so that Laurens can pick his interior colors when his paint-man gets going.

Here’s a few pics of Dave’s front floorpan, on the passenger side. Something hit it and punch a small hole in it, as you can see, which we hammered down for the time being, but will need metalwork. We’ll probably be replacing the toe pan itself entirely. We’ve got Pat working on Dave’s Mustang, so more pictures are coming!

We’re really getting down on disassembling Cathy’s Mustang, and though we’re making headway, we are finding a lot of rust and metal damage. This one’s going to be in the metalwork phase for quite a while–we’ll be doing a lot of full-on welding to replace sheets of metal (just lead filling won’t cut it on this one). As you can see, we’re wrapping up the parts we pull off and have done quite a bit already.

We started pulling out all of Laurens’s parts and will be sorting them for those that need cleaning and those that are ready to be re-installed as we prep to re-assemble Laurens’s Mustang. Tim also did some grinding on the trunk lid and hood to get out the little bits of rust, then he etch primed it to keep it protected.

In addition to grinding and priming numerous parts on Laurens’ Mustang, such as the trunk lid and the door jambs, Savannah also finished up the cowl work by undercoating over the seam seals so it looks good and helps harden the seal so it will last. Savannah also put etch prime and gray prime over the areas we have finished up on.
